About me

My name is Marie. I live in Leicestershire since 2012. In my first year of arrival, i engaged with Transition Leicester, Positive Money and Footpaths Leicester. I ran the positive money leicester group.  I organised events, a discussion group and the Money workshop to help people reflect upon their relationship with money. I also train as a facilitator to run a Footpaths group to support group and families to reduce their carbon footprint. End of 2014, Zina Zelter from Footpaths and I, we decided to run a year of events culmutating into a day of festival: The Green Festival of Making and Mending. From the festival, Leicester Fixers emerged and has been running Restart Parties since May 2015. In 2018, The project received a grant from Leicestershire County Council to help set up 6 repair communities across Leicestershire. It is currently the main project I am working on.

Apart from those projects, I work and study. I freelance for The Crop Club a social enterprise which supports people to grow food. I have a certificate in Permaculture and teaches from time to time at the Permaculture course in Leicester. I am also a doctorate from Loughborough Design School. My thesis is on the factors influencing user repair propensity. I support students with their work.

Outside of it all, i am a keen dancer (salsa), a beginner violonist, i draw with wax crayons and garden. I live with my husband, embrace our mixed heritage and spend lot of time with our family.

What did I learn from analysing my expenditure after a year

In the following blog post, I share the results of two analysis. The first one is an analysis of my spendings by categories after a year, the second is analysis of what I want to achieve by category. The analysis contribute to my main aim which is to achieve financial independence. I am currently trying to pay a debt - 12K for a student loan. To do the first analysis, I downloaded all the statements from my current account in an excel format. I assigned a category to each entry. What are the results? I  allocated 18% of my resources to my loan and the same amount to travel to France and have a couple of trip in the UK. I spent more money on conspicuous consumption than food. I did not have many outings that involved financial expenditure. What am I missing? I haven't got a good idea of what all the cash I have taken out was used for. A part of it must be to commute to work, then it is a mix of food shopping, outings, shopping and more outings. For the second analyy...

Godsent

She had tried for a year or two to make the hedging bush to recover and live again. She had worked so hard for it to get better. Before she knew it, a man fell onto it and broke all the branches. She stomped, she roared, she got very upset. What is the message she received? She will probably never know until she let it finally all go. Her attachment to the bush is to made her perished. Until, she wakes up and breathe in the storm of opportunities...

Welcome to Social Activator

The purpose of this blog is to log thoughts on social activism, design, marketing and community building as well as to review of fantastic projects within the community which strive to create spaces for people to share knowledge, skills, abilities and fun. My vision is for everyone to come to the recognition that they are social activator. They are change agents. They can create opportunities for other to find their own space in this world to create a better present for themselves but also for others. We are all activators. I have plenty of ideas on how this blog will be run. I will probably start where I am now in the UK, Leicester before expanding my reach. I will write down all those ideas and then structure my thoughts before moving to my next action. I keep you posted!
